Why Your Major GPA is the Only Number Tech Companies Care About

The Gen-Ed Trap

You are a Computer Science major. You spend 40 hours a week writing code, building apps, and studying algorithms. You have straight 'A's in every single computer science and math class you have ever taken.

However, your university required you to take general education courses to graduate. You got a 'D' in Art History and a 'C' in Introduction to Sociology because you simply didn't have time to write the essays.

Because of those gen-ed classes, your Cumulative GPA is a 2.8.

When you apply for a Software Engineering internship at Apple or Microsoft, their automated system filters out any resume with a GPA below 3.0. You are instantly rejected.

The Major GPA Hack

There is a completely legal, ethical, and highly effective way to bypass this filter: List your Major GPA on your resume.

Tech recruiters do not care about your grade in Art History. They only care if you can write efficient C++ code.

By calculating a GPA that only includes your Computer Science, Math, and Engineering courses, your 2.8 Cumulative GPA suddenly becomes a 3.8 Major GPA.

How to Format Your Resume

When you build your resume, you must be honest, but you get to dictate the framing.

Under your "Education" section, format it exactly like this:

B.S. in Computer Science

University of Michigan*

Major GPA: 3.8 / 4.0

If the automated system asks for a GPA, input the 3.8. If a human recruiter asks you in an interview why you listed your Major GPA, simply explain: "I wanted to highlight my academic performance in my core technical competencies, as I felt it was the most relevant metric for this engineering role."

Recruiters respect this. It shows you understand data presentation.

When You CANNOT Use This Trick

There are two places where this trick will get you immediately blacklisted:

Investment Banking / Management Consulting: Elite finance firms demand perfection across the board. If you try to hide a bad gen-ed grade with a Major GPA, they will ask for your official transcript and revoke your offer for lack of transparency.

Law School / Medical School: Graduate admissions committees require your absolute, unedited cumulative GPA across all college courses ever attempted.
