The 'Major GPA' Hack: How to Hide a 2.7 Cumulative GPA on Your Resume

You are a Senior majoring in Finance. You are a brilliant finance student; you have an 'A' in every single accounting and economics class.

However, during your Freshman year, you thought you wanted to be a doctor. You took Chemistry, Biology, and Calculus. You failed all three of them.

Because of that Freshman disaster, your Cumulative GPA is a 2.7. If you put a 2.7 on your resume, you will never get an internship.

How do you survive the HR filter without lying? You use the Major GPA Hack.

Cumulative vs. Major GPA

Cumulative GPA: Includes every single class you ever took at the university, including the Chemistry class you failed.

Major GPA: Only includes the classes specifically required for your degree (e.g., only your Finance and Business classes).

If you strip away the freshman science classes, your Finance Major GPA is a 3.8.

How to Format the Resume

It is completely legal and ethical to list your Major GPA on your resume, as long as you explicitly label it as such.

DO NOT DO THIS: GPA: 3.8* (This implies it is your cumulative GPA, which is a lie).

DO THIS: Major GPA: 3.8 / 4.0*

When an HR recruiter scans your resume, their eyes will lock onto the "3.8". It proves to them that you are highly competent in the specific skills they are hiring you for.

If they ask about your Cumulative GPA during the interview, you can confidently say: "My cumulative is lower because I struggled with Chemistry as a freshman, but as you can see by my Major GPA, I have mastered Finance." Employers respect this narrative of growth.

The Strategy: If your Major GPA is at least 0.2 points higher than your Cumulative GPA, you should list both on your resume. If your Cumulative is below a 3.0, list only the Major GPA to survive the initial HR software filters.
