The PTCAS Prerequisite GPA: Why Your Overall GPA Doesn't Matter
The English Major Trap
You were an English major in college. You earned a stellar 3.9 Cumulative GPA.
During your senior year, you decided you wanted to become a Physical Therapist. You scrambled to take the basic science prerequisites required for admission: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Anatomy.
Because you lacked a strong science background, you struggled. You earned a mix of 'B's and 'C's in the sciences.
When you apply through PTCAS, your massive English credits protect your Cumulative GPA, keeping it at a very safe 3.7. But you receive zero interview invites. Why?
Because you failed the Prerequisite GPA filter.
What is the Prerequisite GPA?
While PTCAS calculates your Cumulative and Science GPAs, individual DPT programs calculate a third, highly specific metric: The Prerequisite GPA.They will strip away every single class you ever took (including your English 'A's), and they will isolate the exact 8 to 10 classes they require for admission. Usually, this list includes:
They will average those 10 classes together. If you got 'B's and 'C's in those classes, your Prerequisite GPA might be a 2.8, even though your overall transcript says 3.7.
The Automated Rejection
Almost all DPT programs have a hard, non-negotiable cutoff for the Prerequisite GPA (usually a minimum 3.0 or 3.2).If your Prerequisite GPA is a 2.8, the admissions software will automatically throw your application in the trash before a human ever reads your personal statement.
If you are a non-science major pivoting to Physical Therapy, you cannot rely on your old humanities grades to pad your application. You must secure 'A's in the core sciences, or you will not pass the automated filter.
