TMDSAS GPA Calculation: The Brutal Reality for Texas Pre-Meds

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Republic of Texas

If you are a Pre-Med student living in Texas, you do not use the national AMCAS system to apply to state medical schools.

Texas operates its own massive, completely independent medical school application system called TMDSAS (Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service).

TMDSAS covers all public medical, dental, and veterinary schools in Texas (including powerhouses like UT Southwestern and McGovern). Because Texas subsidizes medical tuition heavily, keeping costs incredibly low, TMDSAS schools are highly competitive. By law, they must admit a class that is 90% Texas residents.

The TMDSAS Academic Fresh Start Loophole

TMDSAS is notorious for having extremely strict grading rules. They average all repeated courses, just like AMCAS.

However, TMDSAS has one massive, unique loophole: Academic Fresh Start.

If you are a Texas resident and you have college credits that are 10 or more years old, you can legally invoke the "Academic Fresh Start" law (Texas Education Code § 51.931).

If you invoke it, TMDSAS will completely ignore all grades (both good and bad) earned 10 or more years prior to your application date. If you partied in your 20s and earned a 1.5 GPA, and you return to college at age 32 and earn a 4.0, TMDSAS will calculate your Cumulative GPA as a pure 4.0. The old grades physically disappear from the calculation. (Note: You cannot pick and choose. If you invoke Fresh Start, you lose the old 'A's along with the old 'F's).

The TMDSAS Science GPA (BCPM)

TMDSAS calculates your Science GPA using the standard BCPM (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math) framework.

Unlike the DO application (AACOMAS) or PA application (CASPA), TMDSAS strictly requires Math and Statistics to be included in your Science GPA. If you are struggling in Organic Chemistry, getting an 'A' in an upper-level Statistics course is a highly effective way to drag your TMDSAS Science GPA upward.
