The TMDSAS Match System: How Texas Med School Admissions Actually Work

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Texas Algorithm

If you apply to medical school outside of Texas (via AMCAS), the process is simple: You apply, you interview, and the school calls you to offer you a seat. You can hold multiple acceptances at once.

If you apply to public medical schools in Texas via TMDSAS, the system operates entirely differently.

TMDSAS uses a computerized Match System (similar to residency matching) to place students.

How the TMDSAS Match Works

  • The Interviews: Between August and December, you travel across Texas interviewing at various medical schools (e.g., UT Southwestern, Texas A&M, Tech).
  • The Pre-Match Offer: From October 15th to December 31st, highly desirable applicants (usually those with 3.9+ GPAs and 515+ MCATs) may receive "Pre-Match Offers." You can accept multiple pre-match offers.
  • The Rank List: In January, you must log into the TMDSAS portal and rank all the schools where you interviewed in order of preference (1 to 10).
  • The Algorithm: The medical schools also submit a rank list of the students they interviewed. A computer algorithm runs, pairing students with their highest preferred school that also ranked them highly.
  • Match Day: In February, Match Day occurs. If the algorithm matches you to a school, you are legally bound to that school. Any Pre-Match offers you held at lower-ranked schools are instantly revoked and given to other students.
  • The Ranking Strategy

The biggest mistake Texas applicants make is trying to "game" the algorithm.

Some students think, "I loved UT Southwestern, but my GPA is only a 3.6, so I probably won't match there. I'll rank Texas Tech #1 because it's a safer bet."

This is a fatal error. The TMDSAS algorithm is mathematically designed to favor the student's preference. You must rank the schools in the exact order of where you genuinely want to live and study, regardless of how competitive you think you are. If you rank a "safety school" #1, the algorithm will match you there instantly, completely ignoring the fact that a higher-tier school might have had an opening for you.
