The TMDSAS Match System: How Texas Med School Admissions Actually Work
The Texas Algorithm
If you apply to medical school outside of Texas (via AMCAS), the process is simple: You apply, you interview, and the school calls you to offer you a seat. You can hold multiple acceptances at once.
If you apply to public medical schools in Texas via TMDSAS, the system operates entirely differently.
TMDSAS uses a computerized Match System (similar to residency matching) to place students.
How the TMDSAS Match Works
The Ranking Strategy
The biggest mistake Texas applicants make is trying to "game" the algorithm. Some students think, "I loved UT Southwestern, but my GPA is only a 3.6, so I probably won't match there. I'll rank Texas Tech #1 because it's a safer bet."
This is a fatal error. The TMDSAS algorithm is mathematically designed to favor the student's preference. You must rank the schools in the exact order of where you genuinely want to live and study, regardless of how competitive you think you are. If you rank a "safety school" #1, the algorithm will match you there instantly, completely ignoring the fact that a higher-tier school might have had an opening for you.

Before you worry about the Match, ensure your GPA is competitive for Texas public medical schools.
