Balancing Part-Time Work and a Full-Time Degree

The 65-Hour Work Week

To survive the cost of living, the average Australian university student works roughly 20 to 25 hours a week in retail or hospitality.

Simultaneously, a full-time university load (4 subjects) is officially designed by the university to require 10 hours of study per subject per week.

  • 25 hours of paid work + 40 hours of study = A 65-hour week.
  • This is completely unsustainable. You will burn out by Week 6. Here is how to strategically survive the grind.

    1. The 3-Subject Hack (Underloading)

The biggest secret in Australian universities is that you do not have to take 4 subjects a semester.

At most institutions, taking 3 subjects is still officially classified as "Full-Time" for Centrelink Youth Allowance and public transport concessions.

By dropping one subject, you instantly free up 10 to 12 hours of your week. It reduces your stress massively and protects your GPA. The only downside is that your 3-year degree will now take 4 years to complete (which is perfectly fine).

    2. Strategic Subject Selection

Do not take four exam-heavy subjects in one semester. When choosing your electives, look at the syllabus. Balance your load by taking two subjects with final exams, and two subjects that are purely assignment/essay-based. This spreads your workload across the 12-week semester and prevents the fatal "four exams in three days" nightmare during the swot-vac period.

    3. The Weekend Sacrifice

If you work 8-hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday at a café, you will never have a day off to recover. Your brain will fry.

The optimal student schedule involves working weeknight evenings (e.g., bartending or tutoring on Tuesday and Thursday nights). This leaves your weekends entirely free to catch up on lectures and actually experience a social life.

Use our Study Hours Calculator to map out your week. If you are working more than 20 hours, you must seriously consider underloading to protect your mental health and your GPA.
