Honours Degrees in Australia: The Brutal WAM Cutoffs

FastGPA Educational Team

The Gateway to Academia

In the US, an 'Honors' degree simply means you had a high GPA when you graduated.

In Australia, Honours is an entirely separate, brutal 4th year of study. You do not take classes; you spend 9 months writing a 15,000-word thesis under the supervision of an academic.

If you want to become a registered Psychologist, or if you want to get into a fully-funded PhD program, an Honours year is legally and practically mandatory. But getting accepted into Honours is one of the most competitive processes in Australian academia.

The Cutoff Reality

To be invited to an Honours year at a Group of Eight university (like UQ or ANU), you usually need an absolute minimum WAM of 75 (Distinction). For competitive fields like Psychology, the cutoff often pushes to 80+ (High Distinction).

But here is the catch that shocks 3rd-year students: They do not look at your cumulative WAM.

How the Honours WAM is Actually Calculated

Universities know that students mess up in their first year. Therefore, they calculate a specific Honours Admission WAM.

  • The 3rd Year Weighting: The admissions committee will heavily weight (or exclusively look at) your 3rd-year (Level 3000) subjects in your specific major.
  • Example: You are an Arts student majoring in History. Your overall WAM is a 68 because you failed a Biology elective in Year 1. However, in your 3rd-year History seminars, you scored 82, 85, and 88.
  • The Result: The History department calculates your 'Major WAM' as an 85 and enthusiastically accepts you into the Honours program.
  • First Class vs Second Class Honours

Once you are in the Honours year, your final grade dictates your entire academic future.

  • First Class Honours (H1): Usually requires a thesis mark of 80+. If you get an H1, you are practically guaranteed entry into a PhD program with a $35,000/year government stipend (RTP Scholarship).
  • Second Class, Division A (H2A): Usually 75-79. You can still get into a PhD, but you will likely miss out on the funding/scholarship.
  • Second Class, Division B (H2B): Usually 70-74. Your academic career is effectively over. PhD programs rarely accept H2B students.
  • Plan Your Final Year Carefully

If you want to do Honours, you cannot coast through your 3rd year. Every single assignment in your major subjects counts heavily toward that admissions cutoff.
