Can You Get Into Australian Medicine with a Non-Science Degree?

The Pre-Med Illusion

If you want to be a doctor, you must study Biomedicine or Science, right? Wrong.

In the Australian postgraduate (GEMSAS) system, medical schools actively want diverse cohorts. They want doctors who understand ethics, communication, economics, and law.

You can apply for Medicine with a Bachelor of Music, a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or a Bachelor of Commerce.

In fact, non-science students have a hidden, massive advantage in the admissions process.

The Double Advantage of the Arts Student

Advantage 1: The GPA Protection Science degrees are brutal. Getting a High Distinction in Advanced Calculus or Organic Chemistry is incredibly difficult. The cohort is competitive, and the exams are objective (you are either right or wrong).

An Arts degree (while still intellectually rigorous) often allows for more subjective grading. If you are an excellent writer, it is often statistically easier to maintain a near-perfect 7.0 GPA in a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in History or Philosophy) than in a Bachelor of Science. In the GEMSAS algorithm, a 7.0 GPA in Arts is worth exactly the same as a 7.0 GPA in Quantum Physics.

Advantage 2: GAMSAT Sections I and II The GAMSAT is not just a science test. 50% of the exam tests your ability to interpret complex sociology texts, poetry, and write philosophical essays. Biomedicine students routinely bomb these sections because they haven't written an essay since high school. Arts and Law students dominate Sections I and II, securing massive points.

The Prerequisite Catch

While most universities (like Sydney, Melbourne, and Deakin) do not have any prerequisite subjects, there is one major exception: The University of Queensland (UQ).

To apply to UQ Medicine, you must have completed two specific university-level subjects in your undergraduate degree:

  • Integrative Cell and Tissue Biology
  • System Physiology
  • If you are an Arts student, you must strategically take these two science subjects as "electives" during your degree to keep the UQ pathway open.

If you are struggling in Science, stop destroying your GPA. Consider transferring to a degree you excel at. Use our GEMSAS GPA Calculator to see how a perfect non-science GPA changes your medical trajectory.
