PTE vs IELTS for PR: How to Claim 20 Points for English

FastGPA Educational Team

The 20-Point English Requirement

In the ultra-competitive Australian PR points test, maxing out your English score is non-negotiable.

The Department of Home Affairs awards points based on three tiers of English proficiency:

  • Competent (IELTS 6.0): 0 Points (Mandatory minimum to apply).
  • Proficient (IELTS 7.0 in all bands): 10 Points.
  • Superior (IELTS 8.0 in all bands): 20 Points.
  • If you do not have Superior English (20 points), you mathematically cannot compete for a 189 visa in occupations like Accounting, IT, or Engineering.

    The IELTS Trap

For decades, the IELTS exam was the gold standard. But scoring an 8.0 in the IELTS Writing module is notoriously, brutally difficult. The exam is marked by human examiners. They are highly subjective, and penalize heavily for minor structural issues or repetitive vocabulary.

Native speakers from the UK and USA routinely sit the IELTS exam and score 7.5 in Writing, failing to secure the 20 Superior points.

    The PTE Academic Hack

The Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic) is 100% computer-graded. There is no human examiner. The AI grading algorithm looks for specific acoustic patterns, fluency, and keywords.

  • The Strategy: You don't need to write a Pulitzer Prize-winning essay to get a perfect score in PTE Writing. You just need to follow a strict structural template, use correct grammar, and feed the AI the keywords it wants.
  • The Speaking Section: In IELTS, you talk to a grumpy human. In PTE, you speak into a microphone. As long as you speak loudly, fluently, and without hesitation—even if your pronunciation isn't perfect—the algorithm will reward you with high marks.
  • The Equivalency Scores

To claim the 20 Superior points using PTE, you need a minimum score of 79 in all four modules (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing).

Almost every migration agent in Australia will tell you the same thing: Do not take IELTS for PR purposes. Switch to PTE, memorize the templates from a coaching center, and game the AI algorithm to secure your 79+.

    The Validity Period

For migration purposes, your English test result is valid for 3 years from the date of the test. (Note: For university admissions, it is usually only valid for 2 years).

Ensure your test doesn't expire while you are sitting in the SkillSelect queue. Use our PTE to IELTS Converter to ensure your specific sectional scores meet the strict 'Superior' threshold set by Home Affairs.
