Australian universities are obsessed with "Group Assignments." Professors claim it prepares you for the collaborative nature of the corporate workforce. The reality is that it allows the professor to mark 50 reports instead of 200.

The Free-Rider Dynamic
In a randomly assigned group of four, the dynamic is almost always the same:
The "Shared Grade" Injustice
In a standard group assignment, everyone in the group receives the exact same grade. If you stay up until 3 AM rewriting The Ghost's terrible section to ensure the report gets an 80%, The Ghost also gets an 80%.
The Defense Mechanism: Peer Assessment
Universities know the free-rider problem exists. To combat this, they often introduce Peer Assessments (like the SPARKPLUS system).
After the assignment is submitted, you confidentially rate your group members. If three group members state that the 4th member did exactly 0% of the work, the software will automatically adjust the grades. The three hardworking members might get an 85%, and the free-rider will be adjusted down to a 0% Fail.
Strategic Tip: Document everything. If a member is not contributing, do not just complain at the end of the semester. Email the tutor in Week 5 with screenshots of the WhatsApp group proving they are unresponsive. The tutor can often remove them from your group before they ruin your final grade.
