Cumulative GPA
The Australian 7-Point GPA Scale
Unlike the US 4.0 scale, most Australian universities use a 7-point scale. Your GPA is an average of the grade points you earn, weighted by the credit point value of each unit.
| Grade Name | Code | Percentage | GPA Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Distinction | HD | 85% - 100% | 7.0 |
| Distinction | D | 75% - 84% | 6.0 |
| Credit | C | 65% - 74% | 5.0 |
| Pass | P | 50% - 64% | 4.0 |
| Fail | N / F | 0% - 49% | 0.0 (or 1.5) |
Scale Variants
While the standard scale awards 0 points for a Fail, some universities use an Alternative Scale that awards 1.5 points for a Fail to lessen the impact of a single failed unit. Griffith University uses a slightly different variant where specific percentages within the Pass band award 3.5 points, and Fails can award between 0 and 3 points depending on the percentage.
Weighted Average Mark (WAM)
Your WAM is an average of your actual percentage marks across all units, weighted by the credit point value of each unit. Many universities use WAM rather than GPA to determine Honours classifications or academic standing.
