Does Middle School GPA Transfer to High School?

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The 8th Grade Panic

Every spring, millions of 8th graders panic because they failed a middle school class. They are convinced that Harvard has already rejected them before they even step foot into a high school building.

The biggest myth in American education is that middle school grades follow you forever.

Here is the absolute truth: Your Middle School GPA does not transfer to High School, and colleges will never see it.

The High School Clean Slate

When you graduate from 8th grade and enter 9th grade, you receive a massive academic reset.

Your High School Transcript—the official document that will eventually be sent to university admissions offices—starts completely blank. Your high school cumulative GPA will be a 0.0 on the first day of freshman year.

It does not matter if you were the valedictorian of your middle school or if you failed every single class in the 7th grade. High schools do not care, and colleges are not legally allowed to request your middle school academic records.

The One Major Exception: High School Courses in Middle School

There is one critical exception that can catch students off guard.

If you take a High School Level Course while you are still in middle school, that grade might appear on your high school transcript.

The most common examples are:

  • Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Spanish I or French I
  • Earth Science / High School Biology
  • If you take these classes in the 8th grade and pass, many school districts will officially grant you the high school credit. This is fantastic because it frees up your schedule to take AP classes as a senior.

However, if you take Algebra I in the 8th grade and get a 'C', that 'C' will be the very first grade permanently etched onto your high school transcript. If you are struggling in a high-school-level math class during middle school, it is often better to drop the class and take it again fresh during your freshman year to protect your future high school GPA.
