Does the Military Check My High School GPA or Just My ASVAB?

The High School Dropout

You are a high school senior. You hate school. You have a 1.8 GPA and you are currently failing math.

You decide to drop out and just join the Marine Corps. You take the ASVAB (the military entrance exam) and score an incredibly high 85. You are obviously smart, you just hate homework.

You go to the recruiter, expecting to ship out to boot camp. He tells you: "Go back to school. I can't take you without a diploma."

The GPA vs Diploma Rule

When enlisting in the military as an enlisted service member, the military does not care about your high school GPA.

Whether you graduated with a 1.2 GPA or a 4.0 GPA, you enter the military at the exact same rank (E-1) and get paid the exact same amount.

However, the military cares deeply about the Diploma.

Tier 1 vs Tier 2 Recruits

The military classifies applicants based on education:
  • Tier 1: High School Diploma (or at least 15 college credits).
  • Tier 2: GED or alternative credential.
  • The military limits the number of Tier 2 (GED) recruits they accept every year to a very tiny percentage (usually under 5%). Why? Because historical data proves that people who quit high school are statistically much more likely to quit boot camp or get separated early.

If you drop out and get a GED, you will be put on a massive waiting list, and you will be forced to score significantly higher on the ASVAB just to be considered.

The Strategy: Do whatever it takes to get that physical High School Diploma. Take remedial classes, do summer school, accept a 1.0 GPA—just get the piece of paper. That diploma makes you a Tier 1 recruit, which is the golden ticket to enlistment.
