The Military Tier System

Unlike colleges that scrutinize your GPA down to the decimal, military recruiters are looking at broad educational categories to determine your likelihood of completing a first term of service.

Tier 1: Preferred

  • Traditional High School Diploma
  • Requires meeting your state's minimum graduation GPA (usually 1.5 - 2.0)
  • OR: GED + 15 College Credits (100-level or higher) with a 2.0+ GPA

Tier 2: Restricted

  • GED or alternative high school equivalency
  • No college credits
  • Extremely limited enlistment slots (often < 5% of recruits)
  • Requires much higher ASVAB scores to qualify (often 50+)

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the military care about my GPA?

The military primarily cares whether you graduate with a traditional High School Diploma (making you a Tier 1 applicant). To graduate high school, you generally need to maintain a minimum GPA (usually around 1.5 to 2.0, depending on the state). So indirectly, yes—if your GPA is too low to graduate, you cannot easily enlist.

What is a Tier 1 applicant?

The military groups applicants into tiers. Tier 1 means you have a traditional High School Diploma or at least 15 college credits. Over 90% of all military recruits come from Tier 1. It is the easiest and most preferred way to enlist.

What if I have a GED instead of a diploma?

If you have a GED, you are considered a Tier 2 applicant. The military strictly limits the number of Tier 2 applicants they accept each year (often capping it at 5% of all recruits). You will also be required to score significantly higher on the ASVAB test to qualify.

How can a Tier 2 applicant become Tier 1?

If you dropped out of high school or have a GED, you can upgrade your status to Tier 1 by earning 15 college credits from an accredited community college. You must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA (C-average) in those 15 college credits for the military to accept them.
