The Six-Month Nightmare
German workers enjoy some of the strongest employment protections in the world (Kündigungsschutzgesetz).
Once you are a permanent employee, firing you requires massive legal justification, months of notice, and often hefty severance packages. Because of this, German companies are terrified of hiring the wrong person.
To protect companies, the government created the Probezeit (Probation Period).
The Ruthless Rules of Probezeit
When you sign a contract for a corporate job in Germany, the first 6 months of your employment are legally designated as the Probezeit.
During this 6-month window, the standard labor protections do not apply.
If a company realizes you don't fit the team culture, or your German isn't as good as you claimed in the interview, they will ruthlessly cut you in Month 5.
What Happens to Your Visa if You are Fired?
This is the terrifying reality for expats. Your EU Blue Card or Work Visa is directly tied to that specific employment contract.
If you are fired during your Probezeit, you are suddenly unemployed, and your visa's foundation is gone.
1. Do you have to leave Germany instantly? No. You must immediately inform the Ausländerbehörde (Immigration Office) that you were fired. By law, they will usually grant you a 3-month grace period to find a new job.
2. The New Job Trap Finding a job in 3 months is stressful, but there is a catch: The new job you find must meet the exact same visa criteria as your old job. If you had a Blue Card paying €46,000, your new job must also pay over €45,300. You cannot just take a job at a supermarket to stay in the country.
3. Unemployment Money (ALG I) Because you only worked for 5 months, you have not paid into the unemployment insurance system for the required 12 months. You are not eligible for state unemployment money. You must survive those 3 months entirely on your own savings.
