Surviving the TUM Aptitude Assessment (EpV)

The Elite Gatekeeper

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is widely considered the MIT of Germany. It is consistently ranked as the #1 university in the country, especially for Engineering and Computer Science.

Because TUM receives tens of thousands of applications globally, they do not just use a simple Numerus Clausus (NC) GPA cutoff. They use a highly complex, two-stage evaluation process called the Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren (EpV) — the Aptitude Assessment.

If you want to study at TUM, you must understand exactly how the points are calculated.

Stage 1: The Automated Points System

When you apply to a Master's program at TUM, your application is fed into a mathematical formula that awards you points (usually out of 100).

  • Your Bachelor's Grade (Max ~60 Points): Your overall Bachelor's GPA is converted to the German scale using the Bavarian formula, and then assigned a point value. A flawless 1.0 will get you maximum points. A 2.5 will get you significantly fewer.
  • Curricular Analysis / Subject Match (Max ~40 Points): This is where most international students fail. TUM will brutally analyze your Bachelor's transcript module by module. If TUM's Bachelor in Informatics requires 30 ECTS credits in "Theoretical Computer Science," and your foreign Bachelor degree only gave you 15 credits in that specific area, you will lose massive points in the curricular analysis.
  • The Stage 1 Result:

  • If you score above a certain threshold (e.g., 70+ points), you are directly admitted.
  • If you score below a certain threshold (e.g., under 50 points), you are directly rejected.
  • If you score in the middle (e.g., 50 to 69 points), you are pushed to Stage 2.
  • Stage 2: The Interview or Exam

If you fall into the middle bracket, TUM is basically saying: "Your grades are okay, but your Bachelor's degree didn't perfectly match our curriculum. Prove you are smart enough."

You will be invited to Stage 2, which is either:

  • A 20-minute Academic Interview: Usually conducted via Zoom by two TUM professors who will grill you on complex academic concepts related to your major.
  • A Written Entrance Exam: For massive programs (like Informatics), you may have to sit a highly rigorous written test (often held in Munich, though online options sometimes exist).
  • If you pass Stage 2, you are admitted.

Strategic Advice: Do not apply to TUM blindly. You must meticulously map your Bachelor's syllabus to TUM's requirements before applying. Use our TUM Aptitude Assessment Calculator to estimate your Stage 1 points based on your grades and subject match.
