Frequently Asked Questions
ECTS stands for the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. It is the standard grading and academic credit system used across the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) to ensure that academic work is easily comparable and transferable between universities in different European countries.
By official European definition, 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25 to 30 hours of total student workload. This includes everything: attending lectures, seminars, self-study at home, exam preparation, and writing assignments. Therefore, a standard 5 ECTS module requires roughly 125 to 150 hours of total effort.
A standard full-time academic year in Europe equals exactly 60 ECTS credits (30 ECTS per semester). Consequently, a standard 3-year Bachelor's degree is 180 ECTS (though some 4-year programs are 240 ECTS). A standard Master's degree takes 1 to 2 years and therefore requires 60 to 120 ECTS credits.
The most widely accepted conversion rate used by US universities and credential evaluators (like WES) is 2 ECTS = 1 US Credit. Therefore, you simply divide your ECTS credits by 2 to get the US equivalent. A full European semester of 30 ECTS equals a full US semester of 15 credits.
The United Kingdom uses the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS). The conversion is very straightforward: 1 ECTS = 2 UK CATS credits. A full academic year in Europe (60 ECTS) is exactly equal to a full academic year in the UK (120 CATS).
