Semesterbeitrag Calculator

The Semesterbeitrag (semester contribution) is a mandatory fee paid by all students at German public universities every semester (every 6 months). It is NOT a tuition fee. Instead, it covers administrative costs, funds the student union (Studierendenwerk) which runs the dining halls and dormitories, supports the student committee (AStA), and usually includes a public transport ticket.

On average, the Semesterbeitrag ranges between €150 and €350 per semester. The exact amount depends entirely on your specific university. Universities that include a comprehensive regional public transport ticket (Semesterticket) will have a higher fee, while universities without one (like many in Bavaria) have much lower fees (around €85 - €150).

Many German universities have recently upgraded their regional Semesterticket to a nationwide discounted student 'Deutschlandticket' (valid for all local and regional transport across Germany). If your university offers this, it typically accounts for about €176.40 (6 months x €29.40) of your total Semesterbeitrag.

Yes. The Semesterbeitrag is mandatory for all enrolled students, regardless of whether you have a DAAD scholarship, BAföG, or other financial aid. You cannot be officially enrolled (immatrikuliert) or receive your student ID card without paying this fee before the start of each semester.

At many universities, you must pay a one-time enrollment or registration fee (Einschreibegebühr) or a fee for issuing your physical student ID card (CampusCard) during your very first semester. This usually adds an extra €20 to €60 on top of the standard Semesterbeitrag for that specific semester.
