CLAT 2026: Why National Law Universities (NLUs) Dominate Corporate Placements

In India, if you are a brilliant student who hates mathematics, there is one career path that offers the same (if not more) prestige, wealth, and corporate power as an IIT degree: Corporate Law.

The gateway to this world is the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), which grants you entry into the 24 National Law Universities (NLUs).

But not all NLUs are created equal. Let's look at the brutal hierarchy of law placements and why the top 3 NLUs operate in a completely different universe.

The Tier-1 Law Firms (The Big 7)

In the corporate law world, there are elite firms that handle billion-dollar mergers and acquisitions (M&A) for companies like Tata, Reliance, and Google. These firms include: Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM), Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM), Khaitan & Co, Trilegal, AZB & Partners, JSA, and L&L Partners.

These firms pay fresh 23-year-old law graduates a starting salary (retainer) of ₹16 Lakhs to ₹20 Lakhs per annum.

Where do they hire from? Almost exclusively from the Tier-1 NLUs.

The NLU Hierarchy and CLAT Ranks

To get into a Tier-1 NLU, your CLAT rank must be exceptionally high.

1. The Holy Trinity (NLSIU, NALSAR, NLIU)

Colleges: NLSIU Bangalore (The absolute peak), NALSAR Hyderabad, NLIU Bhopal.

Required Rank (General): AIR 1 to AIR 400.

Placement Reality: 100% placement for anyone who wants a corporate job. Top foreign law firms (Magic Circle firms in the UK) visit NLSIU Bangalore and offer packages crossing ₹45 LPA.

2. The Tier-1.5 Defenders (WBNUJS, NLU Jodhpur, HNLU)

Colleges: WBNUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, HNLU Raipur.

Required Rank: AIR 400 to AIR 900.

Placement Reality: Excellent access to all Tier-1 Indian law firms. You will easily secure a 15+ LPA job if your moot court and internship CV is strong.

3. The Mid-Tier NLUs (NLUO, RMLNLU)

Colleges: NLU Odisha, RMLNLU Lucknow, RGNUL Punjab.

Required Rank: AIR 900 to AIR 1500.

Placement Reality: The Big 7 law firms visit, but they only hire the top 10-15% of the batch. The rest of the batch secures jobs at Tier-2 firms (₹8-12 LPA) or goes into litigation/judiciary preparation.

4. The Lower-Tier NLUs (The New Ones)

Colleges: NLU Assam, DSNLU Vizag, etc.

Required Rank: AIR 1500 to AIR 2800.

Placement Reality: Zero-to-minimal corporate placements. You will have to hustle for off-campus jobs or focus entirely on clearing the judicial services exams.

The CLAT Preparation Strategy
