CPI/SPI to Percentage: The Gujarat & Maharashtra Grading Guide
What on Earth is CPI and SPI?
If you study engineering in Gujarat (GTU) or Maharashtra (Pune University/SPPU), your scorecard looks different from the rest of India. Instead of seeing SGPA and CGPA, you see SPI and CPI.If a company HR asks for your "CGPA" during an interview, what do you tell them? Here is the exact breakdown of the CPI/SPI system and how to convert it to a percentage.
1. SPI (Semester Performance Index)
SPI is the exact same thing as SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average). It simply measures your performance for one single semester. If you took 5 subjects in Semester 4, your SPI is the weighted average of those 5 subjects.2. CPI (Cumulative Performance Index)
CPI is the exact same thing as CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). It measures your overall performance across all completed semesters. This is the permanent number that goes on your resume. If TCS asks for your CGPA, you simply give them your CPI. They are mathematically identical concepts on a 10-point scale.
The GTU (Gujarat Technological University) Formula
GTU uses a very specific, slightly punishing formula to convert CPI to percentage.GTU Formula: Percentage = (CPI - 0.5) × 10
Example for an 8.0 CPI: (8.0 - 0.5) × 10 = 7.5 × 10 = 75%
If you have a 6.5 CPI (which you might think is 65%), the GTU formula brings it down to exactly 60%. This means a 6.5 CPI is the absolute bare minimum required to sit for Day 1 mass recruiters.
The SPPU (Pune University) Formula
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) recently shifted to a 10-point CBCS system. Their conversion formula is much friendlier than GTU's.SPPU Formula: Percentage = (CGPA × 8.8) + 12 (Note: SPPU officially uses the term CGPA now, but many old-school professors still call it CPI).
Example for an 8.0 CGPA: (8.0 × 8.8) + 12 = 70.4 + 12 = 82.4%
Notice the massive difference? An 8.0 in Gujarat is 75%, while an 8.0 in Pune is 82.4%. This is why you can NEVER use a generic "multiply by 10" rule on your resume. You must use your specific university's formula.
