How Much Does an 'F' Grade (Backlog) Hurt Your CGPA?

The Reality of Getting a Backlog

It is the nightmare scenario for every Indian engineering student: The results drop, you check the portal, and there is a massive 'F' next to Engineering Drawing or M2. You have a backlog (an arrear).

First, take a deep breath. A backlog does not mean your career is over. Thousands of students get backlogs and go on to secure massive FAANG packages.

But you do need to understand exactly what happens to your SGPA, your CGPA, and your placement eligibility.

What Happens to Your SGPA When You Fail?

When you get an 'F' grade, your university assigns you 0 Grade Points for that subject.

Because SGPA is calculated by multiplying (Credits × Grade Points), a zero destroys the numerator of the formula, but the denominator (Total Credits) stays the same.

Example: If you take 20 credits and get an 'A' in everything except one 4-credit Math class (which you fail), your points are 128 instead of 160. Your SGPA instantly drops from an 8.0 down to a 6.4.

Failing a heavy 4-credit subject will usually drop your SGPA by 1.5 to 2.0 full points for that semester.

What Happens to Your CGPA When You Clear It?

Here is the good news. When you sit for the supplementary (make-up) exam next semester and pass the subject, your CGPA heals.

When you clear a backlog, the university deletes the '0' points from your record and replaces it with your new passing grade. If you get an 'A' on the re-test, your overall CGPA will recalculate as if you got an 'A' the first time.

(Note: Some strict universities cap your maximum grade on a re-test to an 'E' or a 'C', meaning you can never get an 'O' in a backlog subject. Check your university regulations).

Will IT Companies Know You Had a Backlog?

Yes, but most won't care.

When you apply for placements, companies ask two distinct questions:

  • "Do you have any ACTIVE backlogs?" An active backlog means you have an 'F' right now that you haven't cleared yet. Almost all top companies (TCS, Infosys, Amazon) require ZERO active backlogs. If you have one, you cannot sit for the interview.
  • "Do you have a HISTORY of backlogs?" A history of backlogs means you failed a subject in the past but successfully cleared it. Most IT companies do not care about your history of backlogs as long as your current CGPA meets their 7.0 cutoff.
  • Exception: Extremely elite core companies (like Texas Instruments) and some MBA programs (IIMs) look at your official transcript. Your transcript will have a small asterisk (*) next to the subject indicating it was cleared in a second attempt.

    The Immediate Action Plan

If you just failed a subject, your number one priority for the next 6 months is clearing it. Do not focus on learning machine learning or web dev if you have an active backlog in Physics. Clear the backlog first, heal your CGPA, and secure your eligibility.

You can use our Target SGPA Calculator to see exactly what grades you need in your other subjects next semester to offset the damage while you study for your supplementary exam.
