NEET Subject Wise Weightage: What Chapters Actually Matter?

FastGPA Educational Team

The 80/20 Rule of NEET

The NEET syllabus consists of 97 chapters across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (11th and 12th standard).

Most students try to master all 97 chapters equally. This is a massive strategic error.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is highly predictable. Every year, 80% of the questions come from 20% of the core syllabus. If you are struggling with time, you must apply the Pareto Principle: focus relentlessly on the high-weightage chapters that guarantee marks.

Biology (360 Marks): The Rank Base

Biology is 50% of your total score. You cannot afford weak chapters here, but some chapters yield massive returns for minimal effort.

High-Yield Core (Must Master):

  • Genetics and Evolution (12th): Consistently accounts for 12-15 questions (48-60 marks). Molecular Basis of Inheritance is the most important chapter in the entire syllabus.
  • Human Physiology (11th): 10-12 questions. Very conceptual, easy to score if you understand the mechanics.
  • Ecology (12th): 8-10 questions. Pure memorization. Easiest 40 marks you will ever secure.
  • Cell Structure and Function (11th): 8-10 questions. Fundamental to understanding all other biology concepts.
  • Physics (180 Marks): The Rank Decider

Physics is where the medical dreams of biology students die. Do not try to become a physicist. Target the formula-based, predictable chapters.

    High-Yield Core (Must Master):

  • Modern Physics & Semiconductor Devices (12th): 7-9 questions. This is the ultimate cheat code. It requires minimal calculus, is mostly formula-driven, and guarantees 30+ marks.
  • Mechanics (11th): 12-15 questions. Enormous, terrifying, but unavoidable. Focus heavily on Rotational Motion and Gravitation.
  • Current Electricity (12th): 4-5 questions. Standard circuit problems. Very predictable.
  • Optics (Ray and Wave): 4-5 questions. Heavy on formulas, light on complex concepts.
  • Chemistry (180 Marks): The Balancing Act

Chemistry requires three different study methods for its three branches.

    High-Yield Core (Must Master):

  • Inorganic Chemistry (Coordination Compounds, p-Block): 10-12 questions. Do not read reference books. Read the NCERT textbook line-by-line exactly as you do for Biology. Rote memorization here is highly rewarded.
  • Physical Chemistry (Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics): 8-10 questions. Practice numericals daily. The math is usually simple, but the conceptual application is tricky.
  • Organic Chemistry (GOC, Aldehydes & Ketones): 10-12 questions. General Organic Chemistry (GOC) is the foundation. If your GOC is weak, you will fail the entire 12th standard organic section.
  • The Strategic Study Plan

If you have 3 months left for NEET, immediately abandon the low-weightage, high-effort chapters (like Fluid Mechanics or complex IUPAC nomenclature of obscure compounds) until you have completely mastered Genetics, Modern Physics, and Coordination Compounds.
