TCS Ninja vs Digital: What CGPA Do You Actually Need in 2026?

Placement Prep Team

The TCS Placement Reality

If you are studying B.Tech in India, TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) is likely the first company visiting your campus for mass recruitment. But in 2026, TCS doesn't just hire for one role. They hire across three distinct profiles: Ninja (3.36 LPA), Digital (7.0 LPA), and Prime (9.0+ LPA).

The biggest mistake students make is assuming the eligibility criteria is the same for all three. It is not. If your CGPA is borderline, you will be locked out of the high-paying roles before you even take the NQT (National Qualifier Test).

The TCS "60% Rule" Explained

For all TCS profiles, the absolute baseline requirement is 60% or 6.0 CGPA across your entire academic history. This means you must have 60% in:
  • Class 10th Boards
  • Class 12th Boards (or Diploma)
  • B.Tech / B.E. (Current CGPA)
  • If you have a 9.0 CGPA in B.Tech but got 58% in your 12th standard, you are disqualified from TCS. The HR system will automatically reject your application. (If you need to calculate your exact board percentage, use our CBSE Percentage Calculator).

    TCS Ninja (3.36 LPA) Cutoffs

TCS Ninja is the mass recruitment profile.
  • Required CGPA: Minimum 6.0 CGPA (or 60%).
  • Active Backlogs: Maximum of 1 active backlog is allowed at the time of appearing for the exam, but it must be cleared before joining.
  • Gap in Education: Maximum 2 years gap allowed (must be declared).
  • TCS Digital (7.0 LPA) Cutoffs

TCS Digital targets students with advanced skills in Cloud, AI, and Full Stack Development.
  • Required CGPA: Officially, the requirement is still 60% (6.0 CGPA). However, in competitive campuses, TPOs (Training and Placement Officers) often artificially raise the cutoff to 7.0 or 7.5 CGPA just to shortlist students for the Digital test.
  • Active Backlogs: Zero active backlogs preferred. If you have a backlog, they will likely downgrade you to the Ninja interview pool even if you pass the coding round.
  • TCS Prime (9.0+ LPA) Cutoffs

This is the elite software engineering role.
  • Required CGPA: While the official NQT form says 60%, students who successfully clear Prime interviews almost universally maintain a 7.5+ or 8.0+ CGPA. The interviewers expect high academic rigor alongside extreme competitive programming skills.
  • How to Survive the Cutoff

If you are in your 6th semester and your CGPA is a 5.8, you are in the danger zone. You have exactly one semester to push it over 6.0. Use our Target SGPA Calculator to figure out exactly what SGPA you need in Semester 7 to cross the TCS threshold and save your placement season.
