VTU Year Back Rules: How Many Backlogs Are Allowed?

VTU: The Graveyard of Engineering Degrees

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Karnataka is legendary for its brutally strict evaluation and unforgiving progression policies. More students suffer a "Year Back" at VTU than almost any other state university in India.

If you are a VTU student, you must understand the progression rules perfectly, or you will lose a year of your life.

The Infamous VTU "Vertical Progression" Rules

VTU does not allow you to endlessly pile up backlogs (F grades). They use a strict vertical progression system combining maximum backlog limits and the N-2 rule.

Here are the standard VTU progression rules (applicable to most recent CBCS schemes, though always verify with your specific admission year circular):

1. The 4-Backlog Limit (To enter the next year) To progress from an even semester to an odd semester (e.g., from 2nd sem to 3rd sem, advancing to the 2nd year), the total number of uncleared backlogs cannot exceed 4.

  • If you have 4 active backlogs across 1st and 2nd semester: You are safe. You enter 3rd semester.
  • If you have 5 active backlogs across 1st and 2nd semester: YEAR BACK. You cannot enter 3rd semester. You must wait a year and clear at least one backlog to drop the count to 4.
  • 2. The Brutal N-2 Rule (To enter 3rd and 4th Year) This is what destroys most students. VTU enforces a strict N-2 clearance policy.

  • To enter 3rd Year (5th Sem): You must have ZERO active backlogs from your 1st Year (1st and 2nd Sem). You are allowed to carry up to 4 backlogs from your 2nd Year, but your 1st Year must be completely clean.
  • To enter 4th Year (7th Sem): You must have ZERO active backlogs from your 2nd Year (3rd and 4th Sem).
  • If you have a single uncleared Physics backlog from your 1st semester when you are trying to enter your 5th semester, you will be handed a Year Back. You will sit at home for a year to pass that one Physics exam.

The CGPA Progression Rule (The New Threat)

In recent regulations (like the 2021 and 2022 schemes), VTU introduced a minimum CGPA requirement for progression.

Even if you meet the backlog limits, you must maintain a minimum CGPA of 5.0 at the end of every academic year to progress. If your CGPA drops below 5.0, you receive a Year Back and must improve your grades to proceed.

    How to Survive VTU

VTU is mathematically unforgiving. You cannot rely on "grace marks" or lenient evaluations.

If you have backlogs, you must prioritize them strategically. An uncleared 1st-year subject is far more dangerous than an uncleared 2nd-year subject because of the N-2 rule. Always study for the older backlogs first.
