What Grade Do I Need
To Pass?
Don't panic. Enter your current grade and how much your final exam is worth to see the exact minimum score you need to survive the semester.
How this calculation works
This calculator uses the standard weighted average formula to find your required final exam score. The logic is simple: your current grade makes up one portion of your final grade, and the final exam makes up the rest.
Required Score = [Target Grade - (Current Grade × (100% - Final Weight))] / Final WeightFor example, if you want a 70% in the class, have an 80% currently, and the final is worth 20%:
Required Score = [70 - (80 × 0.80)] / 0.20 = 30%
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum grade to pass a college class?
At most universities, a D (usually 60-69%) is considered a passing grade that earns course credit. However, many prerequisite courses, nursing programs, and engineering tracks require a minimum of a C (70-73%) or C- to move on to the next level. Always check your syllabus.
What if the calculator says I need over 100% to pass?
If your required score is between 100% and 120%, it is technically possible if your professor offers substantial extra credit on the final exam. If it's over 120%, it is mathematically impossible to pass based on your current grades, and you should consider withdrawing or speaking with your professor.
Is a D passing in high school?
Yes, in almost all US high schools, a D (usually 60-64% or 65-69%) is passing and will earn you high school credit. However, a D will lower your GPA significantly and is often looked at unfavorably by college admissions offices.
Does a 69.5 round up to a 70?
This is entirely up to your professor's discretion. Many professors will round a 69.5% up to a 70% (a C), but they are not required to do so. Check your course syllabus to see if there is an explicit rounding policy.
