Dentistry UCAT Scores: Are They Higher or Lower Than Medicine?
The Silent War
Everyone talks about Medical School cutoffs. There are thousands of spreadsheets, forums, and blogs analyzing every single medical university algorithm.
But what if you are applying for Dentistry? Dentistry applicants also have to take the UCAT. You only get 4 UCAS choices. But because the dentistry applicant pool is smaller, the data is heavily obscured.
Are Dental UCAT cutoffs higher or lower than Medicine?
The Economics of Dental Admissions
To understand the cutoffs, you must look at the supply and demand. While fewer people apply for Dentistry, the extreme lack of seats makes it statistically one of the most competitive degrees in the country.
The Cutoff Reality
Historically, Dentistry UCAT cutoffs are slightly LOWER or EXACTLY EQUAL to Medical cutoffs at the same university. Why? Because the applicant pool, while highly competitive, does not have the sheer massive volume of "super-scorers" (3000+) that the medical pool attracts.
Example:* At King's College London (KCL), a safe UCAT score for Medicine might be 2850+. For Dentistry at KCL, a safe score might be 2750+. Example:* At Newcastle, the Medicine cutoff might be 2730, and the Dentistry cutoff might be 2700.
The Situational Judgement (SJT) Factor
Dental schools place a massive emphasis on manual dexterity and patient communication. Because dentists operate in a highly private, litigious sector with direct, prolonged patient contact, the SJT score is heavily scrutinized. If you score Band 3, many Dental Schools (like Glasgow) will automatically reject you, even if your cognitive score is 2900. Band 1 is highly prized in dental admissions.
The Strategy: If you are applying for Dentistry, do not panic if you see Medical applicants on forums boasting about 2900 scores. A solid score of 2650–2750 (6th to 8th Decile) is often highly competitive for an interview at most UK Dental Schools. Use our Decile Calculator to verify your ranking, and prioritize schools that heavily weight the SJT if you scored Band 1.
