Can I Bring My Family on the Graduate Route? The Complex Rules
The Closed Door
You are on a 2-year Graduate Route visa, working as a Graphic Designer in Manchester. Things are going well. You go back to Pakistan for two weeks to get married. You return to the UK and apply for a "Dependant Visa" so your new husband can join you in Manchester.
The application is instantly rejected. You are shocked. You have a full-time job. You have savings. Why can't your spouse join you?
Because the Graduate Route operates under a very specific, ruthless rule regarding families.
The "Pre-Existing Dependant" Rule
The Home Office designed the Graduate Route as an extension of your student life, not as a family settlement route. Therefore, you CANNOT bring "new" dependants to the UK on a Graduate Visa. The only dependants (spouse or children) who can join you on the Graduate Route are those who were already in the UK as your dependants on your Student Visa.
If you did a 1-year Master's, and your wife stayed in your home country, she cannot suddenly join you when you switch to the Graduate Route. The door is permanently closed.
The 2024 Dependant Ban Impact
This rule is even more devastating because of the January 2024 student rules. Since January 2024, international students on standard taught Master's degrees are banned from bringing dependants entirely. This creates a brutal domino effect:
The Only Solution: The Skilled Worker Route
If you are on the Graduate Route and you want to bring a new spouse to the UK, you only have one option. You must abandon the Graduate Route and immediately switch to a Skilled Worker Visa. The Skilled Worker Visa is a "mainstream" work visa. It allows you to bring a spouse and children from your home country, regardless of whether they were in the UK previously.
The Strategy: If you are single and planning to get married, or if you are married and your spouse is back home, the Graduate Route is useless for family unity. You must treat your job hunt with hyper-urgency. You need a corporate sponsor to give you a Skilled Worker Visa so you can legally unite your family in the UK.
Check Dependant Eligibility
Ensure your family members legally qualify to join you on the PSW visa.
