PSW vs Skilled Worker: Which Visa Actually Leads to UK Permanent Residency?

FastGPACalc Editorial Team

The Dead-End Visa

You have been working in London as a Marketing Executive for 18 months on your Graduate Route (PSW) visa. You love the UK. You want to settle here. You know that you need to live in the UK for 5 continuous years to get Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR - Permanent Residency).

You think: "1 year on my Master's + 2 years on my Graduate Visa = 3 years down, only 2 left to go!"

You check the Home Office website. You read the fine print. Your stomach drops. Time spent on a Student Visa and time spent on a Graduate Route Visa do NOT count towards the standard 5-year route to ILR.

You are effectively starting from Year 0.

The Graduate Route is a Trap

The Graduate Visa is an incredible tool for finding a job, but it is an immigration dead-end. It cannot be extended. When the 2 years are up, you must leave the UK, unless you switch to a different visa category.

More importantly, those two years do not count toward your settlement clock (unless you are aiming for the notoriously difficult 10-year Long Residence route).

The Skilled Worker Route (The Real Pathway)

If you want Permanent Residency, you need a Skilled Worker Visa (Tier 2). This requires a corporate sponsor, a specific job title, and a minimum salary threshold.

The moment your Skilled Worker Visa begins, the 5-year clock to PR starts ticking.

Why You Must Switch Immediately

Many international graduates make a fatal error: They find a great corporate job on Day 1 of their Graduate Route visa. The employer says, "Great, we don't need to sponsor you for two years!" The graduate happily works for two years.

Then, the Graduate Visa expires. The employer finally sponsors them for a Skilled Worker Visa. That graduate must now work for another 5 years to get ILR. They will have been working for that company for 7 years before they are free.

The Strategy: Do not use your Graduate Route as a comfortable hammock. Use it as a battering ram to get into a corporate office. The moment you pass your 3-month probation period, sit down with HR. Say: "I want to switch to the Skilled Worker Visa immediately. I will pay the visa fees myself if necessary." Get off the Graduate Route as fast as humanly possible to start your 5-year settlement clock.
