London vs Outside London: The Exact Financial Difference for Visas
The Geography Tax
You are an international student deciding between Queen Mary University of London and the University of Birmingham. The tuition fees are identical. But when you go to apply for your UK Student Visa, you realize the Home Office treats these two cities very differently.
The UK Government legally mandates that you must have enough money to survive for 9 months without relying on public funds. Because London is one of the most expensive cities on earth, they charge a "Geography Tax" on your visa application.
The Two Financial Tiers
1. Outside London (The Standard Rate) If you are studying anywhere outside London (Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester, Cardiff), UKVI requires you to show £1,023 per month for living costs. They cap this requirement at 9 months. Calculation: £1,023 x 9 = £9,207*
2. Inside London (The Premium Rate) If your university campus is located within the Greater London area, UKVI requires you to show £1,334 per month. Calculation: £1,334 x 9 = £12,006*
The £2,799 Difference
Simply choosing a London university means you must legally prove you have an extra £2,799 sitting in your bank account (on top of your tuition fees) for 28 consecutive days.If you are an international student from a country with a weak currency, finding an extra £2,800 just to satisfy a bureaucratic rule can be the difference between getting the visa and staying home.
What Actually Counts as "London"?
The Home Office doesn't just guess. They have a strict definition. You are considered to be studying "in London" if your university campus is completely or partly within the Greater London Area (which includes the City of London and the 32 London boroughs). If you study at a university just on the border (like Royal Holloway in Egham or the University of Surrey in Guildford), you officially fall under the "Outside London" rate, saving you nearly £3,000 in required proof.
Note: If you are on a 1-year Master's degree, you must show the full 9 months of funds. If you are doing a short 6-month exchange program, you only need to show funds for 6 months (e.g., £1,023 x 6 = £6,138).*
The Strategy: Before you accept a university offer, you must use our UKVI Funds Calculator. Select the university, and our system will automatically apply the correct London or Outside London modifier. If you cannot source the £12,006 for the London rate, you must accept the offer from the regional university.
