Florida Bright Futures 2026: The Exact GPA and SAT Scores You Need for 100% Tuition

The Golden Ticket to Florida Universities

For Florida high school students, the Bright Futures Scholarship is the ultimate prize. Winning the top tier of this state-funded scholarship means 100% of your tuition and fees are paid for at any public Florida university (like UF, FSU, or UCF).

However, the requirements are strict, heavily standardized, and highly confusing. The GPA required for Bright Futures is NOT the GPA on your high school transcript.

Here are the exact requirements for the 2026 graduating class.

The Two Tiers of Bright Futures

There are two primary academic tiers for the scholarship. You must meet all the requirements in a tier to win the money.

1. Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) - 100% Tuition

This is the top tier. It pays 100% of your tuition at a Florida public university, plus a $300 per semester stipend for textbooks.

Weighted GPA: 3.50 (Calculated specifically on 16 core credits)

SAT Score: 1330 (or ACT: 29, or CLT: 95)

Service/Work: 100 Volunteer Hours OR 100 Paid Work Hours

2. Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) - 75% Tuition

This is the second tier. It pays 75% of your tuition at a Florida public university.

Weighted GPA: 3.00 (Calculated specifically on 16 core credits)

SAT Score: 1190 (or ACT: 24, or CLT: 82)

Service/Work: 75 Volunteer Hours OR 100 Paid Work Hours

The "16 Core Credits" GPA Trap

The biggest mistake Florida students make is looking at their high school transcript, seeing a 3.8 GPA, and assuming they easily qualify for the 100% FAS scholarship.

The Florida Department of Education recalculates your GPA using only 16 specific college-preparatory credits:

4 English

4 Math (Algebra 1 level and above)

3 Natural Science

3 Social Science

2 World Language (Sequential, in the same language)

If you got an 'A' in PE, an 'A' in Band, and an 'A' in Culinary Arts, those grades do not count toward your Bright Futures GPA. If you struggled in your core Math and Science classes, your Bright Futures GPA might be significantly lower than your overall high school GPA.

The Volunteer vs. Paid Work Rule

A massive update that benefits recent graduating classes is the inclusion of paid work hours.

Previously, students were forced to find 100 hours of unpaid community service to qualify for the top tier. Now, if you have an after-school job (working at Publix, lifeguarding, tutoring, etc.), you can submit 100 paid work hours instead of volunteer hours to fulfill the requirement. You can also submit a combination of both (e.g., 50 volunteer hours and 50 paid hours).

Important 2026 Deadlines

You MUST submit the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) during your senior year, before August 31, 2026. Do not wait until you know where you are going to college to apply for the scholarship!
