The Threshold of Despair
You check the grading portal on the final day of the semester. Your final grade in AP Calculus is an 89.49%.
To a normal human being, this is essentially a 90%. It is an 'A'. To a ruthless high school teacher, this is an 89%. It is a 'B'.
That 0.01% difference doesn't just change a letter on a piece of paper. On an Unweighted GPA scale, an 'A' is a 4.0 and a 'B' is a 3.0. That microscopic fraction of a percentage point just destroyed a massive chunk of your Cumulative GPA.
The Politics of Rounding
Will the teacher round an 89.5% up to a 90%?This is the most highly debated, subjective, and politicized issue in high school academics.
How to Force a Round-Up
If you are sitting at an 89%, you cannot email the teacher on the last day of school and say, "Please round my grade." That is begging, and it annoys them. You must act proactively two weeks before the semester ends.
When you present them with a specific, tangible reason to find a point, they are much more likely to give it to you than if you just beg for mercy.
